چکیده
An analytical description of the interface motion of a collapsing nanometer-sized spherical cavity in water is presented by a modification of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation in conjunction with explicit solvent molecular dynamics simulations. Quantitative agreement is found between the two approaches for the time-dependent cavity radius R(t) at different solvent conditions while in the continuum picture the solvent viscosity has to be corrected for curvature effects. The typical magnitude of the interface or collapse velocity is found to be given by the ratio of surface tension and fluid viscosity, v ≃ γ/η, while the curvature correction accelerates collapse dynamics on length scales below the equilibrium crossover scales (∼1nm). The study offers a starting point for an efficient implicit modeling of water dynamics in aqueous nanoassembly and protein systems in nonequilibrium.

We examine the total number of collisions Cn in the Λ-coalescent process which starts with n particles. A linear growth and a stable limit law for Cn are shown under the assumption of a power-like behaviour of the measure Λ near 0 with exponent 0 < α < 1.

Motivated by recent simulations and by experiments on aggregation of gliding bacteria, we study a model of the collective dynamics of self-propelled hard rods on a substrate in two dimensions. The rods have finite size, interact via excluded volume and their dynamics is overdamped by the interaction with the substrate. Starting from a microscopic model with non-thermal noise sources, a continuu...

Precision cosmological data hint that a dark energy with equation of state w = P/ρ < −1 and hence dubious stability is viable. Here we discuss for any w nucleation from Λ > 0 to Λ = 0 in a first-order phase transition. The critical radius is argued to be at least of galactic size and the corresponding nucleation rate glacial, thus underwriting the dark energy’s stability and rendering remote an...

We suggest to use ‘fluctuation spectroscopy’ as a method to detect granularity in a disordered metal close to a superconducting transition. We show that with lowering temperature T the resistance R(T ) of a system of relatively large grains initially grows due to the fluctuation suppression of the one-electron tunneling but decreases with further lowering T due to the coherent charge transfer o...
